Seil(blue hair) and Seana(blond) playing with the orphanage children's. |
Sacred Tears tells the story of Seil and Seana, members of the Thieves Guild.
Seil, also knows as Shadow Knight, dreams in becoming well know thief, buy his rushed behavior makes him be seen as child in the eyes of many, the game is actually light, in both themes, story and on gameplay.

The chapter selection menu, each book one chapter, one mission. |
The game is divided in 48 chapter, 24 of the main story, 23 of the side stories and 1 Free Play, in each chapter there will be a mission, these missions can take between 5 minutes to 1-2 hours, giving around 25 hours of game or more.
The game's story is its greatest charm, well written, the characters starts very simple, but a noticeable growth can be seen on them as you proceed in the story, not just on them, but on their relationships with other characters.
One of the most interesting points of the game is how the story proceeds, the story is divided in the characters story and the game's story, making the characters story in front of the player, while the game's story runs in the back of the game, just like how some famous games do, like Resonance of Fate(Tri-Ace's JRPG) and L.A Noire(Action and Open-World from Rockstar), so as you proceed the game the stories will start to mix, thus extending the plot.

Exploration, hunting items to synthesize of sell. |
The exploration has its rewards, by exploring you can find lots of different items some to sell others to synthetize, also by exploring you can find people that can buy some of your items(the only way to make money in the game).
Money has a special function in the game besides buying some items, it can help open few side chapters and be used to pass through some chapters with easy, but buying your way out can be pretty dangerous as you won't level up your thief level and will be far from the optional amount of money, in this game money is scarce.

A normal combat in game. All combats from the start to end are duels. |
You select three cards from your deck of nine, the enemy at selects three right at start of the turn from his hidden deck, when the turn starts all cards are revealed and compared, there is three cards so three moves per turn, at start of the game the levels are simple, higher level wins, lower loses and equals is a draw, as you proceed in the game you can find books, books that are found by exploration, they teach Seil new techniques and spells to Seana, they also rises the level of spells and techniques, techniques and spells that can change flow of battle towards the player, after reaching half of the game onward you can gain techniques that even a low level can defeat higher level cards, thus only equal or higher attack cards can stop these techniques, any other card the enemy will take damage, this is one of the examples of how the gameplay evolves in the game.
The game also has a stat point distribution system, for each level you gain, the character gains one point, a point that can be distributed in the HP, Attack, Defense and Evade for Seil, Magic and Judge for Seana, the status can be altered any time in any moment, even after being used, you redistribute them any time as long its outside battle, there's also accessories for Seil, they also have levels, after a few fights they reach the maximum level(level 4) and develop unique skills like, higher chances of getting potions, higher chances of getting evade cards, etc...

The Stat graphic, left Seil, right Seana, bellow, card, accessories, skills... |
The difficult starts in perfect way, but it begins to oscillate as you proceed, due the tactical changes the difficult became too easy or too hard, the enemies also levels up as you proceed in the game, in the last few chapters the boss like enemies that you faced through the game becomes normal monsters, increasing even more the oscillation in the difficult, all of this transform the game battle system even closer to a luck based battle system.
However the game the "exploration" of the game with high quality, by offering the challenge of opening all extra chapters and the challenge of gathering 300.000Fil(the game's currency). All of the challenges demands exploration, item gathering, patience self-control, since the challenge also demands to gain potions to help survive the battles and turn them in med-kits to be able hold more than 10 potions at once, since med-kits can be bought too even if you need to hold on money the challenges, and potions are the only way to survive the optional bosses and some of the end bosses, and med-kit.

Higher level bat(left) Lower level bat(right). |
Despite the battle sprites being so well made, only the boss type enemies are original, all others are the same with different colors.
Other JRPG's do that, but they have a larger variety of enemies before just changing the colors, Sacred Tears only has bats, wild dogs, wild cats and jellies(also know as slime's) there's also soldiers and thugs, but they only appear in missions.

One of the hand draw art.. |
There's also a hand draw art in the game, they appear at end of "complete chapters", its one of the reasons "complete chapters" and "finished chapters" can differentiated, at end of "finished chapters" only a blue screen with game title appears, this art is so great that its a deep incentive to explore the amx of the game.
Antoher beautiful aspect of the game is the soundtrack, the soundtrack was created by the same artist behind the soundtrack of Accel World, When They Cry and Atelier Iris,
Sacred Tears posses a great number of positive qualities, unfortunately it posses a very small replay value, its possible to select chapters to play, but the or the complete chapters can't be played again despite how well you finished it, there is a Free Play mode, were you can play to fight boss like monsters and try to level up to the maximum amount, the game however isn't boring or tedious at all, so playing from the scratch isn't a problem.
9/10
